The Art of Proposal

One of a person’s most important and memorable events is the day they propose or are proposed to. We are very fortunate that in the process of educating consumers about diamonds and helping them find the nicest diamond at the best prices the interaction between us develops into a friendship. This relationship allows us the privilege of sharing in their intimate moments. We get to hear all about their proposal.

As each of us is an individual we will have a unique way of thinking, resulting in a very personal way of proposing. We have changed the names not so much to protect the innocent but because we do not always remember who they were. We also have taken a little romantic creative literary license in relating the events which may not have occurred exactly as related. The following are examples of the art of proposing.

A low keyed approach
Not all of us are romantics and some have even proposed by just handing the ring by saying “here”. Fortunately, most have a little more flair. Sometimes it is a bit low key because of circumstance. John had wanted to surprise Mary but since they rarely go out except for special occasions going out to a fancy dinner would have tipped her off. Mary would occasionally call John to ask him to bring home dinner. He had just picked up the diamond ring and was contemplating how to present it to her when she called. Tonight it was Kentucky Fried Chicken. After picking it up John carefully made a space in the middle and placed the ring box wrapped in a nicely colored cellophane wrapping. When he got home he left the box in the kitchen and told her to eat it while it was still warm, he was going to change his clothes. From the kitchen came a surprised ecstatic squeal. She was happy and so was he.

The tuxedo proposal
Adam had it all planned, even had his two friends as accomplices. Earlier that morning Adam told Ann he needed her help in delivering a package for him as he was to do something else. He had to leave immediately and asked that she meet him at the wharf to pick up the package. When she arrived he wasn’t there but a mutual friend was and told her he had to leave to get to his other appointment and to meet him there for the package. When she arrive at the appointed place she was told by another friend that the appointment was cancelled and that he will deliver the package himself and meet her at home. Upon arriving home she opened the door and what she saw put a lump in her throat and tears to her eyes. The floor was strewn with rose petals and the room was lit by a multitude of candles. There he stood in a tuxedo. He took her hand, knelt on his knee and asked that she spend the rest of her life with him.

The public proposal
Not many would publicly propose in that it is such a personal affair, but for some it a way to announce their love to the world. College football games was a passion for both of them and during the halftime lull on the Jumbotron appeared this message, “Faye will you marry me, Mike”. Faye at the time was otherwise distracted and did not see the message until Mike nudged her to look at the screen. She smiled and said “Wow they have the same names as us!” not knowing that it was a message to her. That was soon rectified.

Frank on the other hand chose to place his proposal on the theater screen, you know the ads that appear before the movie. There they sat quietly munching on popcorn waiting for the movie to start. On the screen now read “June will you marry me, Frank”. June was just about to say that they had the same names as us, when she turned to see him holding a diamond ring in his hand. Needless to say the movie was anticlimactic.

A candle light proposal
Atmosphere in a proposal is paramount in creating the mood and it is nice to have friends and access to the perfect location to create the perfect proposal. Bruce worked at the Hilton in charge of their Lagoon, which is usually close to the public at night. It would be the best place for that intimate, quiet, personal connection. Bruce had asked Emily to meet him after work so they could go out to have a nice dinner. In the meantime he had feverishly gotten several of his friends to distribute hundreds of candles on the beach that made up edge of the lagoon. Nightfall brought the perfect ambiance of a candle lit beach a private world for a special couple and their special moment.

A romantic production
There are a few men out there that do things with great fanfare. Derek was one of them. He started by making a reservation for a weekend in Waikiki. Dinner, a show, a walk on the beach, each carefully planned to create the mood that will ultimately culminate in the proposal. Dinner was at Orchids a great fine dining restaurant and her favorite. While dining, his friends in on this whole production proceeded to fill the room with roses, rose petals on the floor and in the bathtub along with carefully placed Godiva chocolates. Dinner was great and the walk on the beach was what she thought was already great evening. Opening the door to the room took her breath away, her mind racing and her emotions getting the best of her. He knelt, it was a moment that she would definitely always remember.

The ring as an accessory
Ultimate creativity comes in Plan C. Plan A was to be a very nice dinner and a moonlight proposal at the beach, but the perfect proposal has its own way of working itself out. Plan A was scrapped for unseen reasons and Plan C became the only viable alternative. Eric bought a dress in a brand and style he knew she liked. He became nervous the closer it came to presenting it to her but it was something he knew he wanted to do. He gave the dress to her and asked her to try it on and model it for him. She put it on and he asked her if she liked it. She said she did and asked if it looked good on her. He looked and told her that it seemed as though something was missing. He then said as if the thought just entered his mind that what she needed was an accessory. He withdrew a ring from his pocket, knelt and took her hand, placed it on her finger.

In this world that sometimes seems sometimes less than perfect, it is wonderfully refreshing to hear of these heartfelt expressions of love. It is gratifying that the help we provide allows us to share in these moments. There are those out there who may be still looking for a way to express their emotions but are not sure what to do. We have a few more stories to share and if you are interested in getting ideas you may contact us.
