Many consumers are moving toward Cushion Cut Diamonds as their choice for their center stone. They have a romantic and classic look that sets them apart from the crowd of round brilliants. This surge in popularity is being fueled by the marketing efforts of many of the world’s leading jewelers such as Tiffany & Co. and Harry Winston.

The Cushion Cut Diamond
The Cushion Cut diamond is an antique cut that is a cross between an Old Mine Cut diamond and the Modern Oval cut that was very popular in the early 20th century. They were sometimes referred to as Pillow Cut because they were square to rectangular with rounded corners and sides that resemble a pillow. Cushion Cuts were also referred to as the Candlelight Diamonds as they sparkled by candlelight.

The Cushion cut diamond has a softer look due to the rounded corners than a Princess cut or a Radiant cut which are more geometric and with harder edges. While there is no cut criteria that defines an ideal cut cushion cut diamond, there are combinations of proportions that would look better than others. Our Diamond Photoscope is the perfect tool to help will show where there is light leakage and where light return and this can help consumers determine which of several cushion cut diamonds will look the best. You can choose cushions that are squarish to rectangular in shape based on your preference. If the cut proportions are good the diamond will be very brilliant and fiery. Those of you that prefer a look that is different than a round diamond but with a softer feel and brilliance might consider a Cushion Cut.

Mountings that enhance the Cushion Cut Diamond
The “look” of a Cushion Cut lends itself quite well to the romantic nature of the antique ring styles that are so popular today. Some of the styles that display the fitting nature of the stone are, for example, the halo setting, which has a ring of diamonds set around the center stone. There are filigree designed rings that defines a delicate, light, airy detailed look to the style. You can choose a setting with bead set diamonds or pave set diamonds both styles adds to the antique flavor of the theme. It is also possible to combine modern setting styles along with the older techniques and still maintain that retro look. As much as the Cushion Cut is perfect for the antique look it can also be mounted in any style that fits your fancy from classic to modern. The fit and feel will be based on your personal aesthetic preferences.
